For the artist, each of these circular and ovoid canvases offers up a microcosm or an environment in transition. The pristine white border creates the experience of viewing through a portal or, in some instances, is suggestive of viewing life forms suspended in a magnified Petri dish, or specimens in a shallow glass cabinet. But while these references to containment and scientific study are present, Mazurka’s subjects exceed their frames, alluding to the impossibility of stasis, order and control that pattern systems typically attempt to impose.
Realized within a concise jewel-toned palette, these monochrome compositions are seemingly spot lit, emphasizing our act of looking. While the glowing colours have correlatives in the natural world, such hues are uncommon, drawing attention to aesthetic liberties and transformations in the creation of decorative patterns. Mazurka’s exploration of patterning draws inspiration from natural history illustrations. The wondrous flora and fauna recorded on travels and brought back to Europe from colonial exploits, as well as organisms that were the subject of scientific discovery, created an evolving vocabulary of pattern and ornamentation… Researching these illustrations and their influence on the development of pattern and art movements such as Art Nouveau, Mazurka is interested in how pattern, as a simplification and systemization of natural forms, reflects a taking stock or ordering of knowledge of the world around us.
NATASHA MAZURKA obtained a Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University and Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, where she was the recipient of the J.W. McConnell Fellowship.
